Check Collections

Overview
The original client/server application was a legacy check collection system written in the Delphi programming language.  It used a data aware graphical interface accessing Paradox tables through the Borland Database Engine (BDE) API and required frequent reindexing due to data and index corruption.

Challenges
1.Design a new, non data aware graphical interface with additional features.
2.Convert the database from Paradox to SQL Server.
3.Implement the upgrade and data migration without business down time.

Solutions
1.Redesigned interface using Windows Forms while keeping the general appearance and functionality of the original application.
2.Created data conversion utility for automated reformatting and validated results prior to actual migration.
3.Implemented ADO components and stored procedures.
4.Designed a reporting system with user defined parameters.
5.Installed new Windows server, XP workstations and backup system.

Results
After extensive testing, the upgrade and migration were performed on a weekend resulting in no down time.  The additional functionality, data reliability and reporting features resulted in increased productivity.

Technology
1.Windows Server
2.Visual Basic
3.MS SQL Server
4.Crystal Reports
5.Infragistics data grids

POS Check Validation

Overview
The original verifier application was a legacy real time check validation system written in the Delphi programming language.  The application received data from Verifone point of sale terminals over conventional telephone lines and queried and wrote to Paradox tables through the Borland Database Engine (BDE) API.  Responses were returned to the terminals based on query results.

Challenges
1.Design a new graphical interface with additional features.
2.Convert the database from Paradox to SQL Server.
3.Design procedures to keep serial communication ports open unattended.
4.Implement the upgrade and data migration without business down time.

Solutions
1.Redesigned interface using Windows Forms.
2.Created data conversion utility for automated reformatting and validated results prior to actual migration.
3.Implemented ADO components and stored procedures.
4.Established timed procedures to monitor and maintain port status.

Results
The new verifier application, which included additional features for merchants, was placed online.  The serial port monitoring and automatic reset features resulted in no port locking and no further need to reboot.

Technology
1.Windows Server
2.Visual Basic
3.MS SQL Server
4.Digi multi-port serial interface
5.Infragistics data grids
